The Gift of Smooth, Gleaming Hair

Looking for a great Christmas gift?  Something delightful?  Or something practical?  Why not both, for something that will be appreciated throughout the year.  There are few presents better than the gift of smooth hair — products and accessories that pamper and please.  Here’s our holiday beauty gift guide for the best hair.  Holiday Gift Ideas Silk pillowcases aren’t just a luxury item.  They promote healthier hair with less frizz.  How?  By reducing friction they in turn reduce breakage and other damage.  Depending on your tastes and budget, prices can range from under $40 to over $200.  Scarfs protect hair from sun and wind.  Choose a design that compliments someone’s style and they’ll be used with pleasure rather than as an afterthought before heading outdoors.  Most quality products are in the $30-40 range. Choosing a quality blow dryer takes a bit of research.  Look for lightweight, an ergonomic grip, balanced weight, and numerous (or continuous) heat settings.  Consumer models at as low as $15 are at best tolerable — professional models can run as high as $250 or even $400.  But they can last a lifetime.  Dry shampoo.  Yes, there is such a thing.  It’s a quick alternative to washing, blow drying, and styling all over again.  […]

Home Blow Drying Tips

If you’re like most people you’re tempted to just blast away with the blow dryer until your hair is dry.  And often do.  But getting the best results takes a lot more time, effort, and attention.  After practicing these tips for shiny, bouncy, full-bodied hair at home you’ll really appreciate all the work that your stylist puts in. For Best Results There’s a lot of detail for the techniques of brushing and aiming the blow dryer that we won’t go into here.  Instead, let’s go over the key points that get you the farthest along the way to professional results. Preparation  Work in a heat-protecting mask, leave it in, then rinse as directed on the product’s instructions.  Alternatively you can use a protective styling spray.  Nutritional shampoos and conditioners can weigh down your hair.  So skip them on the days and nights you want to look your best. Wait If there’s just one piece of advice to remember it’s don’t blow-dry your hair when it’s wet.  You’ll have more tangles and your locks will be exposed to more heat.  Most people should let it air-dry until it’s about 65% dry (two thirds).  For fine hair that’s more like 80% (about three-fourths) […]

Top Tips for Healthy Hair

Want flowing locks men can’t take their eyes off?  Or a perfectly professional look?  That takes more than a weekly visit to your stylist.  Or growing it longer and longer.  But it does not mean tons of special equipment or expensive products.  The critical foundation is healthy follicles — the “root” from which your hair grows. Nutrition Healthy, gorgeous hair starts from the inside.  And that means eating healthy.  Go for lots of unprocessed fruits and vegetables for balanced nutrition overall.  That can be difficult these days, so a vitamin and mineral supplement can be a good idea, especially some of those formulated specifically for hair. Shampoo and Conditioning Your scalp’s natural oils together with dust from the environment can build up, clogging pores and follicles.  So it’s actually more important to wash your scalp than the hair itself.  Here are a few specific tips. How often? Even the best products put your hair under a bit of stress.  Most women don’t need to shampoo every day.  But for those with oily hair or who workout every day, daily attention is a good idea.  If you have chemically treated hair (such as dyed or bleached) it’s usually better to shampoo less often.  As […]

Ergonomic Benefits of the Smooth-Air Brush and T360

Most stylists suffer through the stress and strain of blow-drying, putting up with sore wrists, arms, back, neck and shoulders.  Or at least more fatigue at the end of each day than is really necessary.  Proper attention to posture is an important step, but the ergonomics and features of the SmoothAir Brush and the T360 blow dryer nozzle attachment bring benefits to both hairdressers and their clients. For Stylists It’s important to maintain a relaxed and natural position while blow-drying.  With a dryer in one hand and a brush in the other, that can be difficult.  But with the T360 swivel and tilt adjustments, it’s quick and easy to get the airflow at just the right angles without contorting your body.  Those simple adjustments allow you to avoid raising your arms above shoulder height and keep them close to your body.  That means a lot less stress and fatigue for your arms and shoulders. The Smooth-Air Brush’s longer barrel lets you take fewer wider sections.  That cuts down on drying time and results in better finishes.  The ergonomics of the longer yet lighter handle and balanced weight prevents tingling fingers and reduces hand fatigue.  And it’s virtually snag proof. For […]

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome — What Stylists Need to Know

Dealing with hand and wrist pain?  Most hair stylists do from time to time.  But don’t ignore it — there’s a good chance it’s a sign of a potentially very serious health condition.  A recent Modern Salon survey reported that 15% of salon professionals are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and over 1/3 have concerns about the condition. Carpal Tunnel? So just what is it?  An important nerve (the median nerve) passes through the wrist through the “carpal tunnel.”  When that tissue becomes compressed or inflamed (typically through repetitive over-use) minor to very serious nerve damage causes you to feel the symptoms of numbness, tingling, weakness, or worse in your palm and fingers.  Neglected, the pain can become disabling and untreatable. A Special Risk for Stylists Although it gained notoriety as a problem for heavy computer users, any repetitive hand motion can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.  So it’s a common condition among a wide variety of professions — food service workers, drivers, even artists and musicians.  And it’s especially prevalent among hairdressers, who face a day filled with cutting, clipping, and blow drying. Did You Know?  Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome.  Other […]

Top 5 Blow Drying Tips

Looking for an easier way to avoid frizz?  To give your clients extra volume, bounce, and movement in a lasting hold?  These tips reveal better ways to style.  They could mean extra work, but the Smooth-Air T360 ergonomic hair dryer nozzle attachment makes it all easy.  And it makes a big difference in how you blow dry.  Here are our 5 top styling tips. Tip #1 After properly shampooing and conditioning hair, blow it out using a mousse.  Use a generous amount — mousse is over 90% just air and water.  It’s great for all hair types, providing a longer-lasting hold and higher volume.  And it relaxes curly hair. Tip #2 For faster drying remove as much moisture as possible from your client’s hair before blow drying.  Drying from the root and leaving the mids and ends a little damp is important in smoothing.  Rather than making major movements with your arm and wrist to do this, just adjust the T360. Tip #3 Work in clearly divided sections no wider than 3 to 4 inches.  Working your way upwards from bottom to top, always blow in the direction of the cuticle to avoid frizz.  Adjusting the T360 to blow downwards makes this a lot […]

Tired of Frizzy Hair? Get Rid of Frizz!

Want smooth, shiny hair without frizz?  Who doesn’t!  But that can be a lot of work maneuvering your blow dryer to all the right angles.  The T-360 nozzle attachment makes it easy.  Use it along with the following tips for results that bring in compliments from men and women alike. But first, just what is frizz?  With smooth hair, the cuticle (the outer protective layer) lays like roofing shingles protecting each strand.  But improper blow drying and harsh hair care products lift those shingles a bit, creating openings that let vital moisture and oils out.  That also lets excess humidity in, and that makes each hair swell.  Ironically, either way, your hair appears dry and frizzy, not silky and smooth.  And as we all know curly hair is more prone to frizzing than straight, so it needs extra care and attention. And what’s a T-360?  Invented by a professional hair stylist and made by SmoothAir it’s an adjustable nozzle that fits on just about any standard blow dryer you might have.  It’s unique patented design lets you quickly rotate the nozzle around in a complete circle and adjust the tilt at the same time.  And that makes it easy to always direct […]
